Leave Your Fears Behind – FearfulAdventurer.com

Guess what? I’m running a competition and I’m giving away a round-trip ticket to anywhere, worth up to $1000!

Next week my book launches in North America. Holy shit.

This crazy writing and publishing journey has brought on the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. Overall, it has perhaps been a little bit like putting my hand up for a temporary mood disorder. “Bipolar anyone?” / “Yes please, I’ll take it!”

Easy? No.

Worth it? Absolutely.

And now the fun part begins: Launch time!

I need you.

I’m putting together a team of people to participate in some book launch-related shenanigans to help with spreading the word. There will be fun. There will be prizes. There may even be cask wine hangovers. But first, there will be writing…

Here’s what’s involved:

Is there something scary that you want to do, but haven’t done because of fear? Do you want to, say, jump out of a plane? Start writing a novel? Quit your job? Run a marathon? Ask your boss for a raise? Sell all your stuff and set off traveling the world? Don women’s underwear on the outside of your pants? Hmm, okay…

Whatever it is, I want you to take one of your fears and stare it in the face and yell “I DENY YOU, YOU BASTARD”. You know which fear I’m talking about. That special one that keeps getting in the way of what you want to be doing. Yes, that one. Got that ugly thing in your sights? Holding it in your mind, kicking and struggling? Okay, good.

Tell me your story

Write a post on your blog outlining your fearful adventure. It could be something ridiculously ambitious, like an epic journey around the world on a unicycle, or something sweet and simple, like going to a nursing home to read books to the elderly. It can be anything at all. It’s your fearful adventure. Use as many or as few words as you like to express it. It can be a 1000-word outpouring, or one eloquent statement: “I want to fly around the world but I’m scared of airplane toilets.” Up to you.

There are only three conditions:

  1. It inspires you.
  2. It scares you.
  3. On some level, big or small, it will change your world.

To help get you feeling a little more inspired to ‘fess up, there’s a reward involved:

The best story wins a round-trip ticket worth up to $1000!

There’s nothing like a free round-trip ticket to help you give you a push. With a boarding ticket in hand, you’ll have no excuse not to do a running leap towards your adventure.

Where you go is up to you. Paris, New York, Hawaii? Palm trees, piña coladas, fromageries? How about a trip to Hooker, Oklahoma? (Hey—I’m not here to judge, I’m here to support you.) Pack whatever you like, but leave your fears behind.

Blank Air Ticket

I’ll also send the first 50 participants a paperback copy of Love with a Chance of Drowning, as well as a signed postcard from me to you featuring a reproduction of my illustration mapping out my very own fearful adventure of sailing across the Pacific (on a leaky boat) with a morbid fear of deep water.

Fearful Adventurer Postcard

To participate:

  1. Share this post on your Facebook page. Tag my Facebook fanpage to let me know you’re participating.
  2. Write a post about your fearful adventure. Once your piece is up, I’ll link to your post in my sidebar alongside all the other fearful adventures.
  3. Mention the launch of Love with a Chance of Drowning by posting this code somewhere in your piece, and post the book trailer on your Facebook or Twitter page.
  4. Publish it on your blog before May 31, 2013*, and Tweet it with the hashtag #myfearfuladventure. *I’m going to extend the deadline until June 17 because several people are running late with submissions, and because I’m also running late with reading submissions! I realize I probably didn’t give enough time on this.

Optional: Since other people will be facing their fearful adventures at the same time as you, report into the group with the highs and lows of your journey by Tweeting with the hashtag: #myfearfuladventure

I’m going to have the fabulous Srinivas Rao of BlogcastFM pick a winner based on the entry that manages to move, shake, or inspire him, or make him laugh or cry. So make it good, people!

A few more things…

The round-trip ticket (valued up to $1000), the postcards, and book prizes will go out to US addresses only. While I’d love to open it up to the whole world, we have to put limitations on location due to the cost of shipping and giveaway legalities. But feel free to participate anyway if you’d like—it should be fun.

If you don’t have a blog…

Don’t worry—you can still play. Take a picture or make a piece of artwork that captures your fearful adventure, and upload it to Instagram or Facebook. Hashtag your entry with #myfearfuladventure and post a Facebook post about my book (post the book trailer if you like). Don’t forget to tag my Fanpage so I know you’re playing.

If you’re not afraid of anything…

You’re my hero. Can I have some of what you’re on? Do you have some wisdom to share on how you cope with fear? A special technique you use to kick fear in the pants? A personal story of overcoming? Tell me. Follow the steps (1 – 4) above with your advice piece, and your entry will be considered for the giveaway.

So, fearful adventurers…

Let’s hold hands and do daring activities together, and then we can sit around the campfire and sing Kumbaya and form a hug circle, and then wake up the next day with a shocking cask wine hangover and an inability to look each other in the eye.

Or not.

How about we skip the whole regretful singing/hug circle scenario and just shoot rounds of ammo into the sky. That works for me too. Yee-haw!

My fearful adventure:

Love with a Chance of Drowning – A Memoir by Torre DeRoche

A city girl with a morbid fear of deep water, I’m not someone you would ordinarily find adrift in the middle of the stormy Pacific aboard a leaky sailboat – total crew of two – struggling to keep an old boat, a new relationship and my floundering sanity afloat.

But when I met Ivan, a handsome Argentinean man with a humble sailboat and a dream to set off exploring the world, I had to face a hard decision: watch the man I was in love with sail away forever, or head off on the watery journey with him. After much nail-chewing, I decided to give up my city life, face my fear of water (and tendency towards seasickness) and join him on a two-year-long voyage across the Pacific.

“Wow, what a book. Exciting. Dramatic. Honest. Torre DeRoche is an author to follow.” Australian Associated Press

“A funny, irresistibly offbeat tale about the risks and rewards of living, and loving, with an open heart.”Kirkus Reviews

“In her debut, DeRoche has penned such a beautiful, thrilling story you’ll have to remind yourself it’s not fiction. Her language is effortless.” —Courier Mail

    Hi Torre!

I found you via Srinivas Rao and am super excited (and nervous and scared and freaked out) to raise my hand to participate. I’ve had my eyes on a dream of becoming location independent was scared to put the story on my blog, let alone be raw and honest with my heart’s desire. Now, thanks to you, I have that reason.

I’ll let you know, via your Fan Page, when it’s live.

    • Torre DeRoche  May 10, 2013 at 3:21 am

I did the trailer! My sister summerderoche.com put her hand up to animate it for me, which is a decision I’m sure she regrets now because I’ve had to ask her for about 20 different variations now.

Re timing on the tickets: I’m still in the process of ironing out the finer details of this, but I’ll put it up on this page once I know.

Hi Torre – You know I’ve been keeping up with all your adventures and was SO thrilled to post a review for you. This sounds like a blast and I could use my FL address even though I’m in Toronto for the summer. I have to enter in the “I’m not afraid of anything …” category though. Ya know, when you get to my age (67) and have been through the ups and downs … yadda, yadda, yadda … I just give that fear factor the evil eye whenever it tries to move in on me. Anyway, I’ll blather on about it in my Facebook post. Don’t forget to let me know if you are coming to Toronto on your book tour. I celebrate your success every time I think of it! (But I have to talk to you about the number of times you had that Canadian in your book use “eh”!) Hugs!

Oh I’m so in. My fearful adventure is currently keeping me up nights in a cold sweat and stomach cramps, and my boyfriend tells me I don’t have to do it so I go back to sleep. Actually he says, “Do what you can and not what you can’t” and although it’s a platitude, it actually holds a fair bit of wisdom. I. Can. Do.This. I am just so scaaaaared! Good luck with the US launch, Torre 🙂

    Hi Torre,

I have just finished reading your book today and absolutely LOVED it!! I had trotted into Dymocks last week with a particular book in mind to buy, when my eyes tripped over the irresistible title of your book. Usually, I am very cagey when it comes to buying books cold off the shelves. But your title was too intriguing to pass by, and so I thought if the blurb er, held water, then I would buy it. It did, and I did, and here we are! So reading your book was my scary adventure! And it paid off!!

I was very taken with your fear of sharks – I have also written about my shark fears in a book. I was amazed to discover I wasn’t the only one to develop a shark phobia from NEVER watching that movie – the adverts were enough to do me in! So I was in the deepest of awe at your bravery of taking on the ocean when so truly phobic. Very impressive and inspiring!

I was also thrilled to read today on this site about your publishing story. Such a dream to go from self-publishing to batting publishers away with a stick. Bravo!! I will be first in line for any further publications to come.

All the very best to you, and thank you so much for the hours of enjoyment I have had while reading your book.

My biggest fear is letting my book sail out into the world. Like you, I wrote and published a book (TEATIME FOR THE FIREFLY: Harlequin/Mira October 1, 2013) which will be launched this fall. It’s putting myself out there, the feeling of being exposed and vulnerable, of being judged, that’s scary. But it’s exhilarating too and I wouldn’t change that for the world. Good luck with your book. I have ordered my copy. Can’t wait to read it. x. Shona

Torre, this is such a great offer and thank you.
I have always wanted to write my book on a very similar story like yours, of meeting a fella and falling in love, and within 8 months of the relationship starting, found myself spending a year and half with him, going on a long-haul cycle trip on a shoestring budget. (he was already going and looking for a travel partner!)

After 28,000 kms and 7 countries later, we had gone through a major breakup along the way and then becoming best of friends, then went to his wedding (he married one my best friends) on our return (they had been writing to each other whilst I was traveling with him!).

I learned heaps about relationships, long-haul budget travel, bicycle maintenance, everything about bicycle, how to keep calm in a smelly damp tent after not washing for days each and every day, angry indian men and nearly sold for a cameral for sex, and a near miss of death in a gun battle, suffering major stomach disorder of guardia and candida due to eating bacterial foods, recovering by fasting, juicing and solely living an holistic raw living food lifestyle etc etc etc. and most of all find me, the real me. A true self-discovery journey.

I have been procrastinating on starting my blog to gain followers of who I can share my story of my journey back to the real world and regaining back my health and finding my purpose in life, but the fear factor has been so hugh. Its like a huge ugly gremlin in my minds eye that chuckles at me every time I back down from trying to start this project rocking and rolling. What will people think? My friends, family and everyone else?

I need to write this book and I need to travel again, got itchy feet. But this time inspire and motivate others to lead full lives of self-discovery, and living healthily and fit lives.

Love a copy of your book and a chance to win the $1000 travel voucher I would hope on the plane to visit the family in the UK first, I have not seen for years as I live in New Zealand and then onwards to start traveling from there, whilst writing my book and sharing what I know about health, fitness and self-discovery.

Cheers Torre – by the way your podcast interview on blogcastfm was was such interesting and you gave such great tips of how to be me as I write my story.

OMG! I grew up 20 miles from Hooker, Oklahoma and the Hooker Horny Toads. Really. It’s their mascot. Be afraid.

As I read your post and started thinking about my fear–more like feeling my fear–of writing, I started crying. (Thanks, Torture Queen. 😉 But I feel better now.) This challenge becomes a Zen koan: if my fear is writing, how do I write about my fear? Stay tuned.

Hooker, OK. I’ll be damned…. you made my day.

    Hi Torre,

Just listened to your interview with Srini on the bus ride home from the office – yeah I know, bit of a slacker really, but it’s hard to keep up with the volume of awesomeness that Srini and David put out there!

Loved the interview, and loved, loved, loved your story.

It also gave me one more reason to write a post that’s been creeping up on me for the past week or so. Funny thing is, a large part of my adventure/fear (or a chapter of it anyway) will have been completed the day before your competition deadline.

I’m sure I can find enough leftovers and unresolveds to incorporate a few dangling threads though.

Will definitely be adding your book to my list – will it be on Audible at some stage do you know?

I’ve even managed to put photos in suitable places now! Anyway, I’m from the UK but wanted to enter anyway for a bit of practise. I only found this yesterday as I got a copy of your book a while ago, so I am sorry its late but I thought I’d wizz it off to you anyway – the info about your book is the first piece of coding I’ve ever put onto my site myself! I happened upon your site and although the challenge is over, I felt compelled to offer my story anyway. It is one full of fear, excitement, unknown, highs and lows and emotions beyond words. I started a blog (habitofpersistence.blogspot.com) at the beginning of this journey, which was only last July.. needless to say it is still only the beginning and I have many more lows to overcome before creating my victory. Hopefully the blog posts will provide insight, but basically I took a giant leap with no net to live my dream. I left a path of success I had created in a company I’d worked with for over 12 years. I am 36, went up the ladder, upper management and was on my way upward with no intent to stop. I have had a passion for nutrition and fitness since I can remember, starting with myself, living the lifestyle, then helping friends and others and ultimately a pain settled in my stomach. I knew there was more for me. I knew I needed to help people. Not just help, rebuild, mold, dig in and discover why the pain and insecurities with themselves, and with food. A better you than yesterday. Love yourself for you. Creating a healthy relationship with food, front he inside out became my vision. I left my job, went back to school after 15 years this last August , started an LLC and took on independent nutrition consulting at a supplement nutrition store in Denver. Well on my way but while that sounds well and good. I took my entire structured, neat little life where I could at least afford monthly living expenses to.. zero structure, taking out a loan against my 401k to pay for living expenses until June where I am hopefully on my own feet.. this is where fear starts to set in.. and starting my life over, literally. Not to mention the athletic component of this, I am highly athletic, compete in NPC bodybuilding (bikini division) as well as many other events and have an (unpaid, pure hobby) full time job in that as well. It goes hand in hand, though. I am my own billboard, motivating others and driving others.. this is part of my end goal. All of this being said, I know my purpose, but that doesn’t make it easier as we have questions and doubts. But, I will never look back, I will succeed. It is hard, today was one of those days. Finding myself in tears asking if I am doing the right thing. I can’t afford the holiday, NYE plans, going out of town, I can barely cover living at the moment. But I am doing it. And I wanted to share this with you. There is so much more behind this but, it’s a start and I hope that you will read and enjoy and let me know what you think.. would love to hear. And would have loved to participate in the trip, considering the circumstances. Se la vi.. all happens with purpose.

When I initially left a comment I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I receive 4 emails with the exact same comment.
Perhaps there is a means you are able to remove me from that service?
    Thank you!
